In my case, the problem is that the door handle has come off and I am trying to put it back on. However, the little pin (spring) that is supposed to keep the handle in place, doesn’t seem to be working properly. It is permanently depressed and doesn’t pop out when the handle is inserted. Is there still a way to fix it or do I need to replace it. Thanks for your help.
My door knob actually has a allen screw that holds into place, that I didn’t know was there until I saw your helpful video. Until I saw your clip, I didn’t know what to do. Thank you for sparing me hours of fustration.
Yeah I’ve done this a million times but how about when the little set screws don’t hold the square threaded rod in place??? My house is 100 years old and all Lowe’s can tell me is “change the lock, we don’t sell that kind anymore”. Maybe Loc-tite super glue is the way to go??
Thanks Tim. I would have never been able to fix mine without watching this video. For other people out there that have no holes at all on the doorknob (like mine) I ended up just turning the cover plate (or I think Tim called it the escutcheon plate) and it ended up hitting a spot where the plate popped out about a quarter inch from the door which exposed a little lever that I moved up about an inch with a small screwdriver and this allowed the door handle and the cover plate to be removed
I must have cheap doorknobs or something! There are no screws in the plate, nor is there a slit to put a little screwdriver in. What there is, is a teeny little nipple-like thing that, when pressed in, allowed me to remove the knob. But I can’t get the plate off because I can’t hold the “nipple” in with one hand and still use a tool in the other hand to pry up the plate. HELP, please!!!
There are either two screws that are visible on one of the round plates that fit against the door, *or* one of the knobs slides off after you discover the release pin. You need to be more creative in your thinking. Imagine how it was put on. Good luck.
There is no screw. There’s a tiny hole in the center of the door knob, and I found a teeny-tiny screw driver that fits inside, but all it does is wobble around in there. Nothing loosens up or comes unattached. Any other suggestions?? Please and thank you!
This is a super helpful video! Thanks!!! If only we had more of these types of handles in our house… For better or worse, we have a home with mostly antique door hardware, all of it poorly installed (or re-installed after a paint job before we moved in). I’d LOVE it if you did a video on how to tighten antique knobs, especially those with a lock under the handle that turns like a bathroom set.
Behold the power of YouTube…. Glad you saved the sweet moola. Help me by telling ALL of your friends about these videos. I need people to watch them to continue to make them.
An ATV ran into my front door… Don’t ask. The latch(The spring that pushes the latch to keep the door from sliding open) That is bent and how can I fix it, I got the dents out but the door won’t open. Is there a way I can fix it cheap or do you think I damaged the internal components?
hey, i happened to drop my doorknob, i think its a yale, maybe. and the whole thing just fell apart into pieces. i dont know how to fix it. i got the pieces complete and i dont know where to start, please help….. thanx…
Finally replaced a broken knob that had been bugging me forever– hadn’t done it because I assumed it would be too hard. I watched this and did it no problem. Thanks!
Matt, you are entitled to your opinion. We may not agree, but ….. oh, never mind – my daughter keeps telling me I have to love my visitors….. Thanks for your comment.

Hooray!!! Congrats on you doing this. Success breed success.
Thanks Tim, after 19 years marriage I was finally able to impress my wife when I fixed the door knobs in our house. Thank you for the videos.
Thanks! You just helped me fix this darn door knob!!! Couldn’t figure out how to take it off.
You’re most welcome! Thanks for sharing your helpful tip!

Look for a small set screw or something else that’s spring loaded that’s stopping your progress.
Excellent video, but it doesn’t help me because my doorknobs don’t have a slit ! Now what???

I LOVE YOU!! You just saved me $100 the locksmith guy quoted me at.
Thank you!!
Take it out of the door. If it works well going in and out just like new, it means it’s binding inside the hole. Adjust the hole.

If there is an identical one on another door, take it apart carefully. Photograph each step.
